HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act passed by the House of Representatives and the United States Senate in 1996.

The Portability Regulation protects workers from losing their health insurance if they lose or change jobs.

The Accountability Regulation protects the integrity, confidentiality and availability of electronic patient health information.
